LED Bulbs Have Come a Long Way in terms of Performance

led bulbs

An LED bulb or LED light is an electrically lighted light that emits light by use of light-emitting diode. They are more energy efficient than equivalent compact fluorescent lamps, as well as many halogen lamps. Compared to typical incandescent bulbs, they have a longer lifespan and use half the energy. It is difficult to find LED lights for sale, yet many consumers choose to replace older lighting with new energy efficient models. Today LED bulbs and light kits are readily available from most home improvement stores and online retailers.

One of the main reasons to replace traditional lamps with energy efficient LED bulbs is to reduce energy costs. The energy efficiency ratings of these lights are much greater than incandescents, which use about seventy percent less energy than Compact Fluorescent bulbs. LED lights are also eighty percent more energy efficient than halogen bulbs. For this reason alone, replacing old lighting with new energy saving LED lights can pay for itself in no time. Using LED lighting will not only make your home more comfortable and cost-effective, it will help protect the environment by reducing the amount of landfill waste produced.

An LED bulb differs from a regular light bulb in that the light is not made of a pure semiconductor, rather a mixture of electrons and atoms are involved. When electricity passes through the gas, the atoms absorb the electrons causing them to release energy in the form of photons (light particles). The energy in the photons is then converted into visible light by the light emitting diodes, or LEDs. While conventional lamps retain most, if not all, of the heat that is released during the electronic arc, LED lights release the remaining heat through the heat sink and remain cool to the touch, making them safe for use near human skin.

LED bulbs come in two types: positive edge and mixed modes. Positive edge LED bulbs produce a brighter light than a normal incandescent bulb but tend to throw off more light in each cycle, creating a cooler working environment for equipment such as computers. Mixed mode bulbs are a hybrid combination of the two: they combine the high intensity of the positive edge bulbs with the ability to produce more brightness per cycle, but they are unable to keep the light, constant as well as the positive edge bulbs.

The advantage of using LED bulbs over other light fixtures is that they don’t produce heat when in use. This means that their operation is safe for electronics, circuitry, and sensitive equipment like photographs and documents. This is especially important in applications where the light fixtures may be placed near machinery or products that produce heat when the light is used. Another benefit of using led bulbs over other types is that they use considerably less energy than incandescents; they also last longer than other bulb types which allows for longer use of energy.

The energy star label, which is usually displayed on the light bulb packaging, refers to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s requirement that all products contain at least 20% LED light output. The energy star rating is intended to help consumers make the best purchasing decision for products that will function well in their surroundings. This is especially important for products that will be placed outside or around areas where there may be excessive heat, such as in outdoor workshops. The energy star qualification helps consumers avoid buying an LED bulb that won’t give off adequate light for their purposes, or one that would heat up quickly and throw off its light output during use. The label doesn’t affect the light output itself, only the percentage of that light output coming from LEDs.

Today’s LED light bulbs are able to supply more light per unit of energy than other types. This makes them excellent choices for both lighting a structure and producing additional illumination at night. In fact, they have become so popular that there are now different types of LED light fixtures available. One of the newer options available is the solar-powered design that can be used in outdoor lighting, garage lights, and other outdoor applications.

Although it may seem like LED bulbs are a step backward in terms of energy efficiency when compared to incandescent bulbs, today’s technology makes them much longer lasting than their predecessors. They last three times longer, which means that LED bulbs can provide bright, clear lighting for far longer than their incandescent counterparts. With increased durability, greater reliability, and brighter light using LED technology, today’s products can stand up to even the most demanding conditions outdoors.
