People often use mobile phones as a camera instead of a phone.  Everyone is making efforts to get the best picture to follow the new tradition of selfies and status uploads.  With the built-in camera as one of the features of a smartphone, the photographer in everyone is coming out.  Some have recognized their true inner potentials as a photographer but do not know enough about the different types of artificial light for photography.    Here, you will come to understand how an ordinary picture can look excellent with varying types of lighting.  There are four main types of artificial lights, namely, incandescent light bulbs, compact fluorescent lights, led bulbs, and strobe lights.

Incandescent Light Bulbs For Photography Lightning

Although the incandescent light bulbs are best for still photography, they are fading away with the advent of new lamps and lanterns.  In comparison to LED and CFL bulbs, they are much brighter.  On the flip side, incandescent bulbs consume more electricity.  Another drawback of these bulbs is that they fuse very quickly, so they do not last long.   They exude a more considerable amount of heat that is not safe for a homemade box.  At all costs, you must use them only in a softbox to prevent ignite of fire.  Since their white balance (color temperature) ranges between 3000 to 3400, they do not blend well with daylight.

Compact Fluorescent Lights – Another Type Of Artificial Light

Compact fluorescent light is popularly known as CFL.  The ban of incandescent light bulbs gave birth to CFL.  CFL bulbs were readily acceptable since they were cheaper and last longer than the former.  However, there is a twist.  Not all types of CFL bulbs are the best for photography lighting.   If you go for cheap CFL bulbs, you will have to bear with low CRI (Color Rendering index).  Higher CRI means lesser visibility of green points.  It means that this type of artificial light renders green color.  It is not a pure white bulb.  It poses a massive problem to the photographers as the picture will show a heavy green tint.  Don’t be fooled by the false propagation by the media when they say ‘Daylight balanced pure white bulb with full spectrum.’

Led Bulbs

The safety issue of CFL bulbs led manufacturers to create UL listed lamps sans mercury.  Furthermore, it is found that led bulbs do not have high green tints while taking photography.  Thus, it is the most suitable type of artificial light for photography lightning.  The fascinating thing about this type of artificial light is that it has a dial that allows you to change the temperature of the color, which makes it easier to mix light with daylight.

Strobe Lights

Strobe lights are also called speed lights or Speedlite.  These types of artificial lights get their power from their self-contained batteries.  Strobe heads with strobe packs are mostly used for commercial purposes.  Professional photographers are familiar with the strobe light.  It would be best not to use a bare head strobe as it can be harsh to the eyes.  Instead, it would help if you bounced the light from the wall for better photography results.

You can use the above artificial lights for photography lightning in a softbox or a light housing along with a reflector.  The purpose of the softbox is to diffuse the source of the light for better results.
